Ancient Pacific Oyster -- Natural Fossil Sculpture

$2,800.00

This exceptional fossil oyster preserves an unusually large expanse of naturally iridescent nacre (mother-of-pearl), displaying luminous blue, silver, pearl, rose and green reflections that have survived for millions of years. Collected from the ancient marine sediments of the Carrizo Plain/Temblor Range, Central California, where a warm Pacific sea once covered the region. Buried between layers of marine sediment, the shell fossilized retaining it’s original nacre — an uncommon preservation that gives the specimen it’s remarkable gem-like appearance.

A sculptural work of natural history displayed upon a hand-finished Eucalyptus driftwood base. Two California landscapes separated by millions of years: an ancient ocean and a modern woodland.

Geological Age

Miocene Epoch: Approximately 15 to 20 million years old

Dimensions:

Fossil: L. 10” x W. 8” x H. 7 1/2”

Driftwood base: L. 12 3/4” x W. 10 3/4” x H. 9”

No carving or sculpting has altered the natural form of the fossil. The polishing process serves only to reveal the extraordinary colors and textures created by nature over millions of years.
